Sample questions

Two questions from this practice test, in the same style as the certification exam. Answer before opening the explanation.

  1. Question 1

A board asks whether adopting the Kanban method implies a rupture in the way the area works. Which answer correctly describes the nature of the method?

    1. Yes, the method replaces the existing processes with a new flow, designed before the first week of operation.
    2. Yes, because the method requires roles and responsibilities to be redefined as a condition for it to start working.
    3. No, the method starts from what the organisation already does and evolves through small and successive changes.
    4. No, because the method is only a tracking board and changes nothing at all in the way the area works.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: C. No, the method starts from what the organisation already does and evolves through small and successive changes.

The method is evolutionary by definition: it settles on top of the existing process and modifies it through agreed steps. Treating it as a rupture provokes the very resistance it was designed to avoid. Treating it as a mere tracking board is the opposite mistake, because limits, policies and cadences change the way decisions are made.

  2. Question 2

A team wants to understand why the lead time has risen without demand having increased. Which relation, originating in queuing theory, links the basic flow metrics and explains the effect?

    1. The relation between the number of people assigned and the number of items concluded in each measurement period.
    2. The relation between work in progress, throughput and cycle time.
    3. The relation between the estimated effort of each item and the deadline agreed with the requester at the moment of entry.
    4. The relation between the number of stages of the board and the variability observed in the lead time of each class.
    Show answer and explanation

Correct answer: B. The relation between work in progress, throughput and cycle time.

With stable throughput, cycle time grows in proportion to work in progress. That is why lead time rises with nothing having changed in demand: more items were accepted at the same time. People assigned, estimated effort and number of stages do not support that relation.
