How the certification exams are built

What a PMCert certification exam measures, how each question reaches the exam and what happens to it afterwards. Everything on this page is what the platform does today.

The blueprint of each certification exam

The blueprint sets how many questions each domain receives, the duration and the passing score. It is published before purchase and is the same source that assembles the certification exam and the score report. The bank is the number of active questions each exam is drawn from.

A certification exam drawn by domain

Each certification exam is drawn at the moment the candidate opens it. The draw follows the number of questions per domain in the blueprint, so two exams of the same certification measure the same things in the same proportions, with different questions.

The seed of the draw is stored with the attempt. If an exam needs to be audited, it can be rebuilt question by question.

Written in three languages

Each question exists in Portuguese, English and Spanish, and the three versions are the same question. The candidate picks the language when opening the certification exam, and the credential is the same in any of them.

No language may be easier than another. The platform compares the success rate of the same question across languages and, when the gap exceeds 15 percentage points, the translation goes to human review.

Reviewed before use

A new question enters as a draft and is not drawn. It only counts after it has been reviewed and activated.

Every change to a question in use keeps the previous version, with date and author. When a candidate challenges a question, the answer starts from the exact text they saw.

The open assessment, kept apart from the certification exam

The open assessment is free, has the same format as the certification exam and shows the right answer with its rationale. That is why it uses its own bank: no open assessment question ever appears in the exam, and the separation is physical, in different tables.

The per-domain results it records show where candidates stumble on the format before paying for a certification exam.

Statistics for every question

After 30 uses, each question has two measures: the share of candidates who get it right, and how well it separates those who did well on the certification exam from those who did not.

A question that almost everyone gets right and that no longer separates those who know from those who do not carries the signature of a leaked question. It is flagged for retirement, and a person decides, never the formula.

Rotation and retirement

The bank of each certification is larger than the certification exam, as the table above shows, and each opening draws a different combination. Anyone memorising questions from earlier candidates meets only some of them, mixed with others.

A retired question leaves the draw with the reason recorded. Retiring a question never changes a result already delivered.

A passing score with no curve

Passing depends only on the candidate’s score against the published passing score. There is no curve, no quota of passes, and other people’s performance has no effect.

An unanswered question counts as wrong. A question that asks for more than one option has no partial credit, and the screen says how many options it asks for.

How a rule changes

Changing the passing score, the number of questions, the duration or the weights requires a new blueprint version, approved and recorded publicly in the candidate handbook.

The change applies to certification exams opened after publication. Each attempt keeps the blueprint version it was taken under, and no past result is recalculated.
