How to choose a product management certification

The best certification is the one that proves what you already do at work and the next step you want to take. Five criteria help compare any option on the market.

Five criteria to compare

  1. A credential earned by exam

A credential is worth more when it depends on passing an exam, not just on attending a course. At PMCert, the credential comes from passing the certification exam.

  2. Published content

You should know in advance what will be assessed. Every PMCert certification publishes its domains and their weights in the candidate handbook.

  3. Public verification

Employers need to confirm a credential in seconds. Every PMCert credential has a public verification page, by code or by name.

  4. Format and timing

An online exam with no scheduling and an on-the-spot result saves cost and waiting. The voucher never expires, so you take the exam when you are ready.

  5. Cost to keep it

Some credentials require paid renewal. The PMCert credential does not expire and has no annual fee.

Which level fits you

Questions about choosing

What is the best product manager certification for beginners?

A foundation-level one, which assesses the basics of product management. At PMCert, that is the Certified Product Manager Foundation (CPM-F). The free practice test shows where you stand before you buy.

Product manager or product owner certification?

Product owner is a Scrum role, centred on the backlog and the team. Product management goes further: customer, market, strategy, discovery and metrics. PMCert certifications assess product management, and also serve product owners who want to grow their careers.

Do I need a course before the certification exam?

A course is one path to prepare, and the credential comes from passing the exam. The candidate handbook lists what is assessed, and the free practice test uses the same question style.

How long does it take to get certified?

It depends on your experience. The certification exam is online, with no scheduling, and the result comes on the spot: on the day you are ready, you take the exam and know right away whether you passed.
