Product Management, from fundamentals to certification.
Product Management is the practice of deciding what to build, for whom and why, and answering for the outcome. This page explains the field, its disciplines and the path to proving command of it by examination.
What Product Management is
Product management is the discipline that connects a customer problem to a sustainable business. Product people investigate the problem, decide what is in and what is out, follow the build and measure whether the solution changed the behaviour it needed to change.
The field combines three kinds of work: discovery (understanding customers, market and evidence before building), strategy (choosing where to play and how to win, and saying no to the rest) and delivery (turning decisions into working software, with quality and rhythm).
What a product manager does
Day to day, a product person runs product discovery to reduce uncertainty, keeps the product vision and roadmap, prioritises the backlog with explicit criteria, defines product metrics that measure real value and negotiates with stakeholders all the time.
What separates someone starting out from someone leading is not the task list but the size of the decision: from prioritising a sprint to deciding portfolio, budget and organisation design. PMCert certifications follow exactly that progression.
The disciplines of the field
Product Management is not a single skill. Product discovery, product strategy, experimentation, analytics, product operations, customer experience and leadership are disciplines with their own body of knowledge, and each can be assessed by examination.
The catalogue below shows the certifications by discipline. Every page carries the full syllabus with the assessed domains and their weights: the exam content is public, and what changes is proving command of it.
How PMCert certifies
Every PMCert credential is earned through an online exam, with the passing score published on each certification page. There is no credential for attendance, for watching a course or for tenure: the exam is the same for everyone, and that is what makes the result worth something.
The credential is permanent and verifiable: each one has a public code any employer can check in seconds. Before buying, the free Open Assessment shows the question style and where you stand, no account needed.
