This recommender shows which PMCert certification fits where you are in your career. It combines three answers (product experience, current role and goal for the next 12 months) with fixed, public rules, the same ones used on the site comparison page. The result gives a main certification, a second one when it makes sense, the reason, the domains assessed in the certification exam and the link to the free open assessment.
How to use
- Choose your range of product experience, counting only the time in which you owned a product.
- Choose the role that describes what you do most of the time.
- Choose your goal for the next 12 months: foundation, decisions, leadership or a specialisation.
- Read the recommendation, the reason and the domains the certification exam assesses.
- Take the open assessment for the recommended certification (20 questions, free) to see your level.
What each field asks for
| Field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| How much product experience do you have? | Count only the time in which you owned a product or part of one. |
| What best describes your role today? | Choose what you do most of the time, not your job title. |
| What do you want in 12 months? | Get into product, consolidate, specialise in one front or lead. |
Example
Someone with 1 to 3 years of experience, who manages a product and wants to lead beyond their own team within 12 months, gets the CPM-E as the recommendation and the CPLE as the next step. The reason: the CPM-E is the CPLE prerequisite and measures what a product leader needs as a foundation. The card lists the 7 CPM-E domains, from product strategy and vision to product life cycle and release decisions, shows the announced pass mark (70%) and links to the CPM-E open assessment.
When to use
- When you are moving into product and want to know where to start proving the foundation.
- When you already manage product and want to choose between the professional credential and a specialisation.
- When your goal is to lead and you need to understand the order between the CPM-E and the CPLE.
- Before talking to your manager about your development plan.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need the CPM-F before the CPM-E?
No. The CPM-E does not require the CPM-F and can be taken by someone who never took the Foundation. The only mandatory dependency in the catalogue is the CPLE, which requires the CPM-E credential.
How is the recommendation decided?
By fixed rules. A specialisation goal leads to the specialisation for that front, with the CPM-F first only for people with no experience who do not work in product yet. A leadership goal leads to the CPLE for people who already lead product people or have long experience managing product; otherwise, the CPM-E (or the CPM-F, for those at the start) comes first. Foundation and decision goals lead to the CPM-F or the CPM-E depending on experience and role.
Can I take two certifications?
Yes. Each certification has its own certification exam, and the specialisations do not require another credential. A combination that often makes sense is a foundation credential (CPM-F or CPM-E) plus the specialisation for the front you work on.
How much study time do I need?
It depends on your foundation. For most certifications, the official guide indicates 35 to 55 hours of study, and each candidate manual gives the indicated load and where to study each domain. The open assessment shows where to start.
Is it useful for product owners?
Yes, if you own product decisions: the CPM-F and CPM-E content covers the work of whoever looks after a product, whatever the job title. The credential attests the knowledge assessed in the certification exam, not a job title.
What if I do not pass the certification exam?
You can take it again, with no waiting period and no limit on attempts. Each attempt uses a voucher, and the questions are drawn afresh. The candidate manual explains the conditions for a new attempt.
