What a product management certification proves
A professional certification is a credential earned by passing a certification exam. It attests that the person demonstrated, under published rules that are the same for everyone, command of a defined set of competencies. It is different from a course completion certificate, which records that the person attended a programme and completed its activities.
Both have value, but they answer different questions. The course certificate says where and what the person studied. The exam-based credential says what the person was able to demonstrate, regardless of how they prepared: through experience, reading, a course from a partner or all three together.
At PMCert, every credential comes from passing the certification exam. No course is required, and no course guarantees a pass. What is assessed is public: every certification publishes its domains and their weights in the candidate handbook, so preparation starts knowing what will be measured.
For employers, the difference shows up at verification. A PMCert credential has its own code and a public verification page, and a company confirms in seconds whether it exists, who holds it and whether it is still valid.
Who each level is for
PMCert certifications follow the progression of people who work in product: the foundation, product management in companies with competing areas, leadership and the specialisations. The right choice is the level you work at today, not the one you plan to reach.
Foundation
For those starting in product, moving from another area or wanting to prove the base: customer and market, discovery and validation, the path from idea to delivery and lifecycle metrics. It is the entry point of the track and requires no prior credential.
Enterprise and leadership
For those already working and deciding with competing areas, budgets and deadlines, and for those who lead product through other people. The leadership certification requires the Enterprise-level credential first.
Specialists
For going deeper into one front of product work: discovery, experimentation, AI products, delivery flow, negotiation, customer experience and design thinking. They require no prior credential.
- Certified AI Product Development Specialist (CAPDS)
- Certified Product Experimentation Specialist (CPXS)
- Certified Product Discovery Expert (CPDX)
- Certified Kanban Management Specialist (CKMS)
- Certified Customer Negotiation Specialist (CCNS)
- Certified Customer Experience Specialist (CCXS)
- Certified Design Thinking Specialist (CDTS)
How the certification exam works
The certification exam is online, taken in your own browser, with no scheduling and no exam centre. You buy the voucher, sign in when you are ready and open the exam. A voucher bought on the site does not expire.
Questions describe work situations and ask for a decision, rather than testing memorised definitions. Some ask for more than one option, and the screen says how many. Every exam is drawn at the moment it opens, from a bank larger than the exam, following the number of questions per domain in the published blueprint: two exams of the same certification measure the same things, with different questions.
The result comes on the spot, with a score per domain. Passing depends only on your score against the passing score published in the handbook of each certification: there is no curve and no quota of passes. Every question exists in English, Portuguese and Spanish, you choose the language when you open the exam, and the credential is the same in any of them.
The integrity rules
- The exam is individual and closed book, which includes artificial intelligence assistants.
- There is no camera, microphone or screen recording. The platform protects the exam and observes objective signals: time per question, the exam window losing focus, copy and paste attempts, which are blocked, and several exams from the same address within 24 hours.
- No signal fails anyone on its own or changes a score. An exam with signals is reviewed by a person, who looks at the whole picture before any decision.
- Candidates who do not pass see their score per domain and get a new attempt at half price for 90 days.

Price and what is included
The price is per certification exam and appears on the page of each certification, in the currency of your country. You pay once: the credential has no annual fee and no renewal.
Teams and educational institutions buy vouchers in bulk, with a volume discount. Nothing is charged beyond the exam: there is no mandatory course, no issuance fee and no verification fee.
What every exam includes
- One attempt at the certification exam, in the language you choose among English, Portuguese and Spanish.
- The result on the spot, with the score per domain kept in your account.
- On passing, the PDF certificate, the credential with a public code and the verification page.
- The digital badge in the Open Badges 3.0 standard, to download from your account and add to your LinkedIn profile.
- A public profile in the directory of holders, if you choose to appear in it.
- The guarantees: a full refund within 14 days if the voucher has not been used, a voucher that never expires and a second attempt at half price for 90 days.
A permanent, verifiable credential
The PMCert credential does not expire and has no annual fee. It carries a unique code, and anyone can confirm at pmcert.org/verify whether the credential exists, who holds it and whether it is still valid, by code or by the name of holders who chose a public profile.
Companies verify up to 50 codes at once on the employers page. If a credential is revoked for proven fraud or an administrative error, the code remains searchable and shows the revocation: verification always tells the current situation.
Everyone who passes also receives the digital badge in the open Open Badges 3.0 standard, cryptographically signed by PMCert. It can be validated in independent verifiers and added to a LinkedIn profile from the account.
How to compare with the other options on the market
Anyone searching for a product management certification finds very different formats under the same name. Third-party prices change often, so what is worth comparing is the format: what the credential requires, what it proves and what it costs to keep.
Courses with a completion certificate
Product schools, universities and course platforms issue a certificate at the end of a programme with a set number of hours and activities.
They prove attendance and completion. The value lies in the learning path, and the credential is tied to the content and calendar of the school.
Exam-based certifications from professional associations
Industry associations, such as AIPMM, certify by exam, with their own content and their own rules for maintaining the credential, published on each site.
They prove command demonstrated in an exam. Before choosing, check the exam format, the language, the cost of the exam and what is required to keep the credential.
Agile role certifications
Product Owner certifications, such as the PSPO from Scrum.org and the CSPO from Scrum Alliance, assess the role within Scrum: backlog, team and events. The first is exam-based; the second comes from a course, with periodic renewal.
They prove command of the Product Owner role, which is one part of product management. Customer, market, strategy, discovery and metrics fall outside their scope.
PMCert
A credential earned by an online certification exam, with no scheduling, no mandatory course and published content. Result on the spot, permanent credential, public verification and an Open Badges 3.0 badge, in English, Portuguese and Spanish.
It proves that the person demonstrated the product management competencies of the chosen level, from foundation to leadership, in an exam with public rules that are the same for everyone.
Five questions settle most comparisons. Does the credential depend on passing an exam? Is the assessed content published in advance? Can anyone verify the credential in seconds? Is the exam taken when you are ready, with no scheduling? What does it cost to keep the credential afterwards?
Frequently asked questions about product management certification
Certification or course: what is the difference?
A course is a path of preparation and issues a completion certificate. A certification is a credential earned by passing a certification exam, with published content and rules. At PMCert, the credential comes from the exam alone, and you prepare however you prefer.
Do I need a course to take the PMCert certification exam?
No. No course is required and no course guarantees a pass. The candidate handbook lists the domains and their weights, and the free practice test uses the same question style as the exam.
Which product management certification should I take first?
The foundation level, which proves the base of product management. At PMCert, that is the Certified Product Manager Foundation (CPM-F). Those already working and leading can start at the Enterprise level, and the "Which certification to take" page recommends one from three questions.
Is the certification exam online? Do I need to schedule it?
It is online, in your own browser, with no scheduling and no exam centre. You open the exam when you are ready, and the result comes on the spot, with a score per domain.
Does the PMCert certification expire?
The credential does not expire and has no annual fee. You pay for the certification exam once, and public verification stays available.
How does a company verify the certification?
By the credential code or by the name of a holder with a public profile, at pmcert.org/verify. Companies verify up to 50 codes at once on the employers page, and the Open Badges 3.0 badge can be validated in independent verifiers.
In which languages is the certification exam available?
In English, Portuguese and Spanish. Every question exists in the three languages as the same question, you choose the language when you open the exam, and the credential is the same in any of them.
What happens if I do not pass?
The result per domain shows where to strengthen, and the new attempt costs half the price for 90 days. The result stays in your account and does not appear anywhere public.
