In detail
Definition and identifying distinction
Early adopters are defined by the connection between an urgent problem and willingness to use an incomplete version. Both elements matter. Willingness alone does not establish that the group meets the definition.
For preparation for the CPM-E certification, use this adopted meaning. When reviewing a scenario, ask what problem is urgent for the group and whether that urgency explains its willingness to use the incomplete version.
Where the term matters in practice
The term matters when deciding which group can use an incomplete version. The relevant distinction is not simply who expresses interest. It is who is willing to use that version because the problem needs an answer urgently.
Keep the group description connected to decisions. The guide's segment sheet records the behaviour defining a segment, what it most often asks for and the most recent decision taken because of it. Applied here, that structure helps keep the early-adopter label tied to behaviour and a practical decision rather than a descriptive label alone.
Relationships with neighbouring terms
Minimum scope concerns what is included: the smallest set capable of answering the question blocking further investment. Early adopters concerns the group willing to use an incomplete version. Minimum scope is not simply a small version of the complete product.
Value proposition concerns the verifiable result obtained by the customer. Early adopters concerns urgency and willingness to use an incomplete version. These concepts answer different questions: what result is offered, what scope answers the business question and which group will use the version.
Internal verification means use by people from your own company. That fact alone does not establish early-adopter status. The urgent-problem condition still needs to be met.
