In detail

Definition and neighbouring terms

Value erosion is loss of the reason to buy with no change in price, quality or satisfaction. The customer may still like the product but no longer see why it warrants a separate payment. Consult the value erosion glossary entry.

A value proposition states the result the customer obtains. A separate reason to buy explains why the customer pays for this product instead of accepting something already included elsewhere. Value erosion concerns the loss of that justification, not a decline in satisfaction.

Where it matters in practice

Value erosion matters when reviewing renewal. The guide identifies three signs together: falling renewal, stable or high satisfaction, and unchanged price. A common cause is another offering the customer already pays for covering the need acceptably.

For example, a customer may remain satisfied with an electronic signature product but stop renewing because an existing file platform now signs documents. A discount does not restore the missing separate reason to buy. The response is to identify something the absorbing offering does not do that matters to the audience, or reconsider the product's position.

Applying the distinction for CPM-E preparation

Use the chain of the reason to buy: problem, result, justification of a separate budget line, and consequence of disappearance. Check each link against recent usage evidence. Ask what concrete task would stop if the product disappeared.

For CPM-E certification preparation, distinguish the condition from its signals. Value erosion is the lost reason to buy. Falling renewal with unchanged satisfaction and price is the diagnostic combination. A weak link in the chain can expose the problem before renewal falls.
