In detail
Definition and examples
Revenue capture form means the mechanism by which revenue is generated. The guide lists subscription per user, charging by volume, charging by result, perpetual licence and charging by transaction as examples.
Use the revenue capture form glossary entry to review the definition. The central question is how the product generates revenue, not simply which result the customer obtains.
Where it matters in practice
The revenue capture profile supports comparison between forms of charging. It examines four dimensions: predictability, alignment with the value delivered, effort of collection and what the customer can cut in a bad year.
The guide illustrates why all four dimensions matter. In its example, the customer's ability to cut expenditure eliminated volume charging, although that option was the most attractive on the other three dimensions. A practical comparison should therefore address customer cutbacks, not only the apparent strengths of a charging mechanism.
Neighbouring terms and CPM-E preparation
Packaging determines what is included in each plan and what is sold separately. Revenue capture form identifies the mechanism that generates revenue. These are distinct decisions.
Value proposition is a verifiable statement about the result obtained by the customer. The chain of the reason to buy connects the problem, result, justification of a budget line and consequence of disappearance. These concepts explain the customer's reason to pay, rather than the charging mechanism.
For CPM-E certification preparation, practise both identifying the mechanism and comparing alternatives in a decision. The guide emphasises applying judgement, not only memorising definitions.
